The latest release on Cali-Tex features the complete solo works of J.C. Davis, James Browns former bandleader. His two funk 45s released in 1970 are extremely rare (you can see one inside Shadows Endtroducing LP!) but with JCs cooperation the music is available again for all to enjoy, with bonus unreleased material from the same session! Seven tracks in all, the music was mixed from the original master tape by Shadow himself. DJ Shadow Shop

www.allmusic.com: Apart from David Sanborn, probably no living saxophonist has a more instantly recognizable voice than Jan Garbarek; actually, given the fact that Sanborns sound is so widely copied, Garbareks may be easier to identify in a blindfold test. This album in particular puts that sound front and center. Garbareks the show; he composed all of the music, and is essentially the only soloist. The music (much of which was composed as soundtrack material for film or video) is quintessential Garbarek, full of the world music influences that have characterized his work since the 1970s. Garbareks resonant, carefully articulated tenor and soprano tone suits the spacious, minor/modal themes. Hes as much a singer as instrumentalist. Garbarek also plays digital synthesizers, mostly as string or flute pads underneath the folkish melodies. The records most notable secondary player is Garbareks ECM labelmate, the bassist Eberhard Weber, whose lyric sensibility is a virtual mirror of Garbareks. This is quiet, contemplative music for the most part — attractive, but not superficially pretty. Its grooves are less celebratory than melancholic. Theres an intensity here borne of deep concentration and commitment to beauty. Garbarek has come a long way since his early days as a quasi-free jazz experimentalist. This music is not jazz, nor is it experimental. But it is compelling in its way, representative of a first-rate creative musician, beyond category.

Согласен с этим описанием, что это не джаз никакой (хотя как стиль иначе определить, не знаю, и они же это тоже под маркой джаза дают). Гарбарек уже на стадии бронзовения и опопсения, но это все он делает как-то очень правильно и красиво, на мой взгляд. Конечно, не "лучшие звуки после тишины", как пишут в буклетах к его поздним дискам, но близко к тому. Действительно, звук у его саксофонов неповторимый. Часть музыки с этого альбома - для фильма и балета. Так и представляешь себе. Состав - те же, что приезжали в 2002 году в Москву: басист Эберхард Вебер, клавишник Райнер Брюнингхаус и перкуссионистка Марилин Мазур, плюс барабанщик Ману Катче, таблаист Трилок Гурту, и в последнем номере (особенно рекомендую!) поет гарбарековская протеже Мари Бойне.

When Neil Finn closed the doors on Crowded House, all signs seemed to point to a more experimental direction for future solo releases; even the title of his first solo album, Try Whistling This, implies a reaction against his reputation for well-crafted, highly melodic songs. However, from the opening track, the light and breezy "Last One Standing," Finn puts all fears to rest. Try Whistling This does dabble in experimentation — most notably in the feedback and distorted vocals of the parnoid "Twisty Bass" and the mild trip-hop groove of "Sinner" — but throughout, he shows restraint, tastefully incorporating more exotic effects while staying true to his high melodic standard and meticulous songcraft. Finn seems clearly freed from the restraints of being in a band, allowing him to try a lot of different ideas, from the sweeping "Souvenir" to the instant pop classic of "She Will Have Her Way" to more delicate atmospheric pieces like the title track, ultimately creating his most complex and diverse set to date. And though many of the songs take time to reveal their treasures, its worth the effort. Try Whistling This features some of Finns best work yet, and in a nearly flawless catalog like his, thats quite impressive.
